Death and No Consequences
Having known my friend Sherlock Holmes for some years, I could tell by the sounds coming from upstairs that he was shaving. He was more alert than ever these past eight months. Until recently, he would still be abed at this hour. As for his pipe, he had increased his tobacco consumption this last fall till now, the Christmas season.
I could barely believe what happened next. Someone was at the door, yet it was only 7:30 AM. I went to tell the person to call at a more suitable hour. The person was Sarah MacGuillicudy. She was a personal secretary to Lord Hotchkiss, he being the nobleman who was the charge d’affaires of the Peerage Society Association. He was the watchdog to ensure protocol should a royal person misbehave or a person other than royalty, besmirch a titled member of British society. He contributed in other ways as well to make the lives of British Royalty more amenable and trouble free.
What use, pray tell, could she or Lord Hotchkiss, have for my friend of longstanding, Sherlock Holmes. On looking at young Miss MacGuillicuddy, I saw a healthy young woman. She was well washed and dressed, with a spectacular head of blonde hair.
Holmes walked into our room, thankfully covered decently, except for his argyle, fleece-lined slippers. I performed the introductions. All hope of a quiet breakfast was soon postponed.
Holmes asked, “What moved you, Miss MacGuillicudy, to come to me?”
The woman looked over at me and asked, “Is it safe to talk, knowing that what I now tell you, must never be repeated?”
Holmes remarked, “Of course, and I’m sure I speak for the doctor as well.”
“Indeed,” I murmured.
Our lovely female guest gave me a piercing stare and asked, “Is that so, Doctor Watson? The reason I must be sure is, it is something that has blemished our Queen’s royal court and a relative of hers is deeply involved.”
Holmes, smiling, said, “Please tell us more.”
With much hesitation, our early morning visitor told us how the oft-troubled Prince Henry had allegedly murdered a waitress late last night. He was a nephew of Queen Victoria and right now the investigation was not being reported. We were told only what we needed to know. Eliza insisted that Prince Henry was innocent of the charge.
Miss MacGuillicudy told us her given name was Eliza, and then informed us that the prince was a favourite of our Queen, and would not do anything half that atrocious, besides there was three other men there with him. Two were common criminals and the third his own companion, count Luis D’Arito of The Spain Royal Family.
Holmes, whose fame had spread over most of Britain, was being asked to investigate the murder, find out the reason or reasons for the murder, and whatever made Prince Henry get involved with a waitress whose immediate family were Irish immigrants and what was their relationship. However, the girl,
